Default Re: Saul Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (May 6, 2017)

    Great looking card this
I am looking forward to the main event but have massive doubts that they can both honour the catchweight limit of 164.5 lbs, there are allegedly "severe sanctions" if Chavez fails to do so however Chavez claimed recently that he is close to weight and believes he can boil down to around 160 lbs.
I'll believe that when i see it!!!

The catchweight contest will take place at an agreed weight of 164.5 pounds, with severe sanctions in place should Chavez come in heavy. It is pushing five years since Jr fought below the Super-Middleweight limit and is also an increase of over 10lbs that Canelo hit the scales ahead of his last outing, against Britain’s very own Liam Smith.
Whilst the weight will be a strong talking point prior to the contest, there’s national pride at stake. Talks have been ongoing for what seems years but now that the ink has dried on contracts, it is fitting the contest will take place on the coveted Cinco De Mayo weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo is arguably the biggest name in boxing at present and added the WBO World Super-Welterweight Title to his ever growing belt collection back in September.
Fans will be upbeat a future fight with Gennady Golovkin, that has been long in the offering, can now be made should he advance against Chavez after various hurdles were overcome in the negotiations.
Son of the legendary three-weight World Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, Jr will know this fight is his opportunity to get back into the big time.
After winning and subsequently defending the WBC World Middleweight Title over a year long period, Chavez then was dethroned by Sergio Martinez back in September 2012. Despite giving Martinez hell for the last round, it was still a unanimous decision victory for Martinez which proved to be Jr’s fight taste of defeat.
After spending a year out of the ring, Chavez pilled on the pounds and outpointed Bryan Vera in both their fights to set up a contest with Andrzej Fonfara.
Chavez was sent crashing to the canvas for the first time in his career in the ninth round and then failed to come out of his corner for the start of the tenth handing Fonfara a TKO victory.
Two points victories have followed, most recently with Dominik Britsch in December which marked a landmark 50th professional victory for the now 30-year-old.
Speaking after the announcement of the fight, Canelo revealed: “I will be prepared, like I’ve been throughout my career, to give a great fight. I want to remind you that when two Mexicans fighters face off, a spectacular show is guaranteed. And I can assure you that May 6 will be no exception, especially during the Cinco de Mayo festivities.”
Patriotic Chavez added: “I dedicate this fight to Mexico. I’m going to win, but my country will too because this is the fight boxing needs.”

The hype and build up I saw was more about Chavez Snr and Oscar dating back to the 90's.

I liked when Junior said at least I have not avoided anyone.

I bet you canelo will be the favourite in this fight.

Although In Spanish, I watched the HBO face off earlier, I thought it was good, Jr properly gave ginger the hump when accusing him of being a cherry picker and took it on the chin when Canelo called him a Mexican laughing stock.

If Jr is comfortable at this weight this will be a good fight.

I'm thinking it'll be a good fight. As we have already seen this year where many of the underdogs were basically given no chance but ended up extremely competitive and producing nice fights.

I dislike both fighters, but it should definitely be a good fight. It is the only time I have ever rooted for Chavez and probably the last. It would be hilarious to see Canelo get beat.

Same here. Canelo is horrible and deserves to lose. It's frustrating that we will likely have to watch him for another decade. Hopefully a few losses will set that right.

I've got no problem seeing him for another decade providing that he fights at his correct weight and cuts all the bullshit that we have to endure from him and his pimp
