The DeGroots were either involved with or were a part of the Hanso Foundation. On top of the behavioral experiments & society settings that the DeGroots were into...the other project that they were in to was something like a "Life-extension Project".

The DeGroots were shown in the Orientation film of the second season. Marvin Candle/Dr Wick/Wickman was explaining who & what they were...check out the films again.

Shows em all in a class room discussing "the Incident" that changed everything within the Initiative.
