Ex-UFC champ Matt Hughes airlifted after truck collides with train
Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes was airlifted to a medical facility after the truck he was driving collided with a train Friday morning.
The accident occurred just south of Raymond, Illinois, about 12 miles north of Hughes' home in Hillsboro.
According to Illinois State Police, Hughes, 43, drove a pickup truck across a railroad grade crossing "directly in front of a train and the train struck the passenger side of the truck" at 10:43 a.m.
HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, said Hughes was airlifted there and its trauma team "stabilized him and continues to help him in his recovery."
"Hughes' family asks that you respect their privacy during this difficult time," the hospital's statement, released Friday night, said. "They ask that you keep Matt in your thoughts and prayers."
Montgomery County Sheriff's Officer Rick Robbins confirmed his office was one of several agencies called to the scene of the accident. Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.
Earlier Friday, UFC president Dana White said he had been in contact with Hughes' family.
"Apparently he has head trauma," White said. "His family is traveling to him now."
Hughes (45-9) held the UFC's welterweight championship at various points between 2001 and 2006. He is recognized as one of the greatest 170-pound fighters of all time. Hughes, who has not fought since 2011 and announced his official retirement in 2013, publicly said he was considering a comeback fight earlier this year.

Been praying for Hughes and sticking with this story. Apparently, he is now awake and responsive by squeezing hands of loved ones at the hospital. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Hit by a train is devastating.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"
Tim Hague: Former UFC fighter dies aged 34 after knockout in boxing bout
Former UFC fighter Tim Hague has died aged 34 after being knocked out in a boxing bout in Canada on Friday.
The Canadian, who fought in UFC from 2009 to 2011, was knocked down five times in the first two rounds against Adam Braidwood before it was stopped.
He walked out of the ring but was then taken to hospital and fell into a coma.
"It is with incredible sadness, sorrow and heartbreak to report that Tim has passed away," his family said in a statement on Sunday.
"He was surrounded by family, listening to his favourite songs," they added. "We will miss him so greatly. We ask for privacy during this difficult time."
Hague beat Pat Barry on his UFC debut but went on to lose his other four fights.
He held a similar record after moving to boxing, starting with victory over Patrick Graham, then losing the following three bouts, including two knockouts against fellow Canadians Mladen Miljas and Braidwood.

So off the ventilator and family notes small improvements. No indication if he's responsive. It's sad when a legend whatever your sport takes a turn like this. Watching ufc card tonight and that snoozer Bellatore last week ? and no info.
Last I read Hughes is doing much better now. He's even been out to eat with his friend, is talking, and lightly grappling. Miraculous recovery.
Man that is great to hear. You imagine many thing when you hear about a guy 'driving into a train' and one is not recovery unfortunately. You can't take the fighter out of guys like that and everything he demonstrated in the ring aids him, family greatly to now remake the life he's lucky to again have out of it.
I always thought Hughes was a complete prick to be honest
He reminds me of the stereotypical high school bully (or jock)
I hear he kills animals for fun in his spare time
And he came across as a cunt when he did TUF.
Matt Hughes is doing better after being seriously injured in a scary truck-train crash last month.
The UFC legend is no longer on a ventilator and has shown "small signs of improvement,” per a statement posted by his family to his sister Beth Ulrici Hughes’ Facebook page.
