We heard about the "bad deal" he had for his last fight because it was so high profile.
If he was getting shit pay then and shit pay in his last fight in relative terms, then it stands to reason he was getting shit pay in between.
He's probably a bit naive in business terms, understandable for a guy earning in a strange country and he's a boxer , not a business guru.

He was getting $5000 a fight when he didn't have a promoter. Kathy Duva then signed him and convinced HBO to show him (who later signed him to a proper deal), the world title shot against Cleverly and several 7-figure paydays.

I'm not saying he hasn't been shafted but his career looks pretty much the norm for any fighter that goes from zero to hero. Whether or not they keep the wealth they amass, or get wrapped up in shitty deals is another matter. It's par for the course in boxing for manager/promoter/fighter splits - and you can guarantee all parties will claim they were the one getting chivved.
