I rewatched afew of these guys fights yesterday – revision for Saturday. Canelo vs Smith, Floyd, Cotto, & Golovkin vs Jacobs, Lemiuex. The most convincing performance from any fight was Triple G’s display against Lemiuex. He threw 5 x the middleweight average of jabs that night so I cant help thinking this will be factor on Sat. I struggle to think of many fights in history where the smaller guy was able to move up and beat the bigger man who had a better jab. If he fights like that on Sat it’s a hard night for Canelo.
Lemiuex - I noticed that in round 7 Golovkin was briefly stunned by a left hook that forced him to reposition his feet. He came back blasting so clearly wasn’t hurt and shook the affects immediately. It’s the only time I’ve seen him properly react from getting hit although its abit like looking through Floyds tapes for signs of weakness you search for a while desperate to find some chink in the armour but what you find is insignificant. Alvarez can’t take any confidence from that.
Jacobs - Golovkin couldn’t do what he wanted in the Jacobs fight. Its was the 1st time he couldn’t dictate the action. “Helpless” is probably the wrong word but the feeling I got from watching it is that he had to just leave it in the judges hands and hope for the best. Its a feeling we may get again on Saturday. Something else to consider is that Golovkin isn’t as comfortable in exchanges as you’d think. Jacobs made him cover up and go back whenever he opened up. Canelo has quick combos too so I can see him having success if it’s an up-close battle (but I don’t expect it to be for the 1st 6 rounds)
Smith - Reconfirmed he is a quality fighter who’s solid and use to being the boss but he was getting caught a lot by Smith. We are led to be belive he is great defensively because of his upper body movement but Smith was unloading on him having success on the ropes. Bit of a worry going into this fight with a bigger guy who wont fold as easily as Smith did. Canelo also was good at using feints in this fight forcing Smith to lead so he could counter. This worked well vs a guy of Smiths level. Also the right uppercut worked all night. Smith couldn’t avoid it. With Golovkins amateur experience Im not sure these things would work as much on him.
Mayweather - Canelo has improved a lot since the Floyd fight so unfair to judge him on it. The only thing still relevant to take away from this is that he struggles with jabs and if his game plan isn’t working he doesn’t have another gear or plan B to switch to.
Cotto - The Cotto fight reminded me just how much smaller Miguel was in that fight. I watched the HBO version which kept going on about how much bigger Canelo was and that Cottos punches had no weight in them. It was true, he never seemed a threat. I noticed that Cotto wasn’t there to have a fight, he just wanted to get through the rounds and steal a decision which was naïve thinking. In hindsight Alvarez should have got a stoppage or at least applied the pressure more to make it clearer. He appeared to fight within himself. I don’t think he gassed but it appeared there was almost a silent agreement between him and Cotto to take rests when they need it without the other taking advantage. Golovkin wouldn’t oblige to that.. He will be challenged more on Saturday, made to fight which will bring out the best in him.
