If you want to work your full Range Of Motion then the way your doing them is "the correct way"
Yes what they are doing is a slight cheat, probably a habit from years of having to keep up with class doing pushups etc. They still have muscly chests because they are still working there chests....to a point.
Heres an example. if you can do 50 of your pushups Max, and they can do 50 of there pushups max, youd have the better chest.
