Calzaghe: Give me Hopkins next

Calzaghe pulling a Tarver trying to make Hopkins move down is he? How about Calzaghe move up, so that when he loses he can still keep his titles. And I have no clue why you think that Hopkins somehow dodged Calzaghe. You'd have a better chance saying that James Toney dodged him too. But whenever I heard of Calzaghe on other sites a few years ago, he was always calling out someone called Chicken Ottke. So I don't see how Hopkins dodged him.

The last time I saw it, it was Tarver coming down off the blubberman kick....

Joe Calzaghe, the World Boxing Organisation super-middleweight champion, is prepared to travel to the United States to face the world's No1 middleweight Bernard Hopkins in what is seen as a career-defining fight for the undefeated Welshman.
"This is the fight I have wanted above all others for the last few years," he said, "and it is the one the boxing world wants."

Since Calzaghe's two-round win over the highly rated Byron Mitchell in Cardiff on Saturday, Hopkins, 38, has said he would be prepared step up to super-middleweight and face him, but only if the fight takes place before the end of next January and only if it is in the US.

"I have no problems taking the fight on his territory," said the 31-year-old Calzaghe. "My message to him is: 'You want it, you got it.' He can have it anywhere and any time."

Hopkins' promoter Don King and Calzaghe's backer Frank Warren reached agreement for a fight last year, and the US television station Showtime was prepared to underwrite the event. But after a $3m (£1.8m) payday had been agreed, the fight fell through when Hopkins doubled his purse demands.

Warren has confirmed he is trying to reopen negotiations. "But he has had opportunities to make money since [beating Felix] Trinidad [in 2001] and has walked away. He is the only fighter I know who seems hell-bent on going from Park Lane to Brick Lane."

Calzaghe underlined his determination to get the fight, laying down a challenge to Hopkins. "Don't find an excuse to let our fight slip away," he said. "I have taken up your challenge to face you in America, so honour your words."

Hopkins said "I want this much money" The promoters said "To hell with it" and the fight fell through. It would be ducking imo if Hopkins said he wouldn't fight him at all(like what Lennox Lewis did to Byrd and Ruiz).

And lets me frank here, back then in the US people would only be tuning in to see what Hopkins would do next and it wouldn't be that big of a sell since Calzaghe wasnt the name then that he is now. Hopkins then went on to face Hakkar, Joppy etc for no where near as much. Around $300,000 DOLLARS!!! for the Joppy fight.

Hopking almost got knocked down by JT in each of their fights and he only fought in the later rounds when JT tired. Joe doesn't tire late and throws a much higher volume of punches than JT so how is Hopkins going to defend against that? The answer: he won't.

I didn't see anything special. He's inconsistant and didnt even look half as good as Lacy made him look. I told you I would watch on Saturday to really get a good look at Calzaghe and he looked like a Hamed wannabe until he got popped in the face and made to bleed. He's not consistant everytime he fights level of opposition, he fights down to the level of his opponent. Thats what will always seperate him from the likes of Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins who would fight there level in every fight of their prime whether it was Joe Below or Ninja Turtle. After all that talk Joe was a big letdown imo. I can't seem to look as good as he did against Lacy consistantly. Or maybe that has something to do with the opponent and not Joe, actually it has a lot to do with Joe. Either way, Joe didn't impress me in the least this weekend and can't seem to avoid straight right hands, is open in between those flurries and brings his hands back down. Lacy made him look like a world beater because he didn't do anything about it, but it seems that Joe aint as good as Lacy made him look to be, otherwise I would expect him to dominate like that everytime out, and he'll never be in Hopkins or Roy Jones' league until he has that consistancy imo.

You shouldn't judge a fighter by one performance Gus. Would you class the Roy Jones that got hammered by Tarver and Johnson anything special? In all of Roys great performances was it the opposition fighting poor fights, or having "off" nights, that made him look so special, or was it because Jones has special talent?

Hopefully Hopkins thinks like you and will be prepared to face him now.

Good points bro, but in my book its one thing to say sh*t & another to do it. Action speak louder than words shall we say. Either way Calzaghe fights Hopkins he loses, same goes for if he fights Wright. I think he beats Taylor though.

Wrights jab & defense, Hopkins' experience & all round ability. Basically I think both guys are technically better than Calzaghe. IMO opinion gets a lesson from Wright & loses a decision to Hopkins as Hopkins makes it a sloppy boring fight.

Taylor lost to Wright IMO, but took it to the limits. Calzaghe has greater skills and output than Taylor and is bigger. Hopkins is old and lost to Taylor because of a limited output in the second fight especially so....

Granted I've seen a lot less of Calzaghe than most of you Brits, but every time I've seen him fight, his punches have looked extremely wide, and he's looked incredibly open right up the middle. That straight lead right is one of Hopkins' favorite punches, and I think he'd have about a 100% connect rate on it against Calzaghe.

Calzaghe is very quick and throws some creative combinations. I don't think his power is very good, and again, though his combos are quick, they are very wide and leave him incredibly open. That's fine and good against second-rate fighters like Jeff Lacy, but against a master technician like Hopkins or Wright, he would pay. I could be wrong, and he could switch everything up the first time he steps up to world class competition, but there's no evidence I've seen that would suggest this.

Hopkins would indeed land the straight right. But only when he is confident enough to throw that punch which in recent times is only after a fight has reached its latter stages. Hopkins is 42 years old!! He is not going to get any better than he was in his mid to late 30's. Calzaghe is a busy bee who swarms. Hopkins has not faced a fighter like that in many a year. Hopkins is a defensive wiz, but Calzaghes output is absurdly high when need be.

Hops would have his hands full. He could survive by being evasive...but the Calzaghe flurries will get through eventually. We arent used to seeing Hopkins hit flush too much, but Calzaghe would hit him square and frequently...

Shza, im as much a fan of Hopkins as Calzaghe and thats the main reason why this fight shouldnt happen. Hopkins will need to retire the way most fighters do....better he stays out like this with full dignity intact...

I didn't see anything special. He's inconsistant and didnt even look half as good as Lacy made him look. I told you I would watch on Saturday to really get a good look at Calzaghe and he looked like a Hamed wannabe until he got popped in the face and made to bleed. If thats Calzaghe then I don't know what the big deal was. He didn't look half as good as Lacy made him look.

You shouldn't judge a fighter by one performance Gus. Would you class the Roy Jones that got hammered by Tarver and Johnson anything special? In all of Roys great performances was it the opposition fighting poor fights, or having "off" nights, that made him look so special, or was it because Jones has special talent?

Roy was out of his prime. Calzaghe is supposed to be IN HIS. Can you name me 2 Roy Jones fights he looked bad in where you'd say "This guy can beat him" in his prime?

I think Calzaghe would easily outwork B-Hop, Dont get me wrong hopkins is a true hall of famer and a briliant boxer.But fighting Calzaghe woud be a step too far, he's such a dangerous fighter and a slick southpaw. Hopkins had great stamina and is a brilliant counter puncher but Calzaghe would throw lighting combo's all night and i doubt Hopkins could avoid them all IMO. It would probably go the distance unless JC can avoid any hand problems in which case he may be able to throw some of those huge bombs we saw earlier in his career. Even in his fight against Mitchell a couple of years ago you could see his power.Ive watched nearly every one of Calzaghe's fights and he wasnt anywhere near his best against bika. But he'd be well up for Hopkins, JC by UD IMO.

Hopkins wouldn't have to avoid all the combos since Joe leaves himself wide open down the middle when he throws them, he's also have to avoid Hopkins straight right all night and that wouldn't happen since Joe gets hit with those. Don't expect Bernard to fight a defensive fight all night, Hopkins can do it going backwards and going forward and he could catch Calzaghe with straight rights before Calzaghe can plant his feet to throw combinations.

I think Bernard would beat Joe.

Hmm I dunno about Calzaghe being at his absolute best, approaching the age of 35 (still pretty god damn great though). And I'm with ya on the Jones thing, he was a freak (also out of Bernard and Joe's league )
