Julio C Chavez did it and so did fighters from the past.

On the plus side, JCC was a pretty busy fighter. On the minus side, he routinely retreated to the friendly confines of Mexican towns to fatten his record against inferior opposition in non-title fights.

That was because he was trying to get to 100 wins and 0 losses. There was no way he was going to do that if he fought top challengers every fight. It also allowed the locals to see the great fighter which was another advantage to non-title fights.

Exactly! Which is why I despise artificially bloated records and have personally never given a damn about his 100-win record. It's like having the tallest building in the neighborhood with some of the floors being held up by a few wooden planks, just for the sake of making it the tallest building.
