Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jr undercard: Callum Smith to defend WBA title against Hassan N’Dam

Callum Smith will defend his world title against Hassan N’Dam on the Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jr undercard on 1 June.

Smith took the WBA super-middleweight strap from George Groves in the final of last year’s World Boxing Super Series – a fight that turned out to be the Londoner’s last before retirement.

The 29-year-old Liverpudlian defends his belt for the first time against 35-year-old N’Dam, who holds a professional record of 37 wins (21 via knockout) and three defeats.

The Frenchman secured a surprise victory over Martin Murray in Manchester last December but has spent the majority of his professional career fighting at middleweight.

Smith’s title defence joins a promising card headlined by Joshua defending his IBF, WBA (Super) and WBO heavyweight titles against Ruiz on his US debut.



Katie Taylor will attempt to unify the women’s lightweight division when she takes on WBC champion Delfine Persoon.

Josh Kelly, one of Great Britain’s brightest welterweight prospects, will take on the experienced Ray Robinson, while Tommy Coyle will take on Chris Algieri for the WBO international super-lightweight strap.

Croydon’s Josh Buasti is also expected to be added to the card.

ANTHONY JOSHUA could fight Deontay Wilder in both the UK and US as part of a two-fight deal, revealed the unified heavyweight champ’s manager.

The heavyweight world champions have failed to agree terms for an undisputed showdown for the past two years with offers being sent by both parties.

Joshua's manager Freddie Cunningham told Sky Sports the solution will be a two-fight deal with both boxers fighting on home and away soil.

Cunningham said: "I think if the fight is going to happen, it's going to be a two-fight deal whatever, so it's going to be one here and one there.



"It makes sense to do it that way. They are both huge names in their territories.

“Why not give the fans in America what they want and give the British fans what they want, so I think it will happen, possibly both, but I don't know which way around."

Wilder, 33, the WBC king, was advised to walk away from a three-fight deal presented to him by AJ’s US network DAZN.

The Bronze Bomber remained with Showtime for his last fight - a first round KO of Dominic Breazeale - while Joshua, 29, is left to face Jarrell Miller replacement Andy Ruiz Jr on June 1.

AJ, who was captured cooling down in an ice bath after training, defends his WBA, IBF and WBO belts at New York’s illustrious Madison Square Garden.

It will mark the Watford ace’s first venture in the US.

Joshua’s manager explained it is an opportunity for the unified champ to “showcase who he is” - with an emphatic KO sure to impress the US audience.

Cunningham added: "It starts with the fighting, his style, what he brings to the ring, the knockout will be the first part.

"Outside of it, I think it's just being himself. If you're one of those guys that maybe talks the talk you only go so far.

“You need to be a bit wider and he's got all the ingredients, he's personable. I think the American public like him as well.

“They seem to get on well with him, it's just showcasing who he is. Do everything in the ring, everything exciting there, and he can showcase who he is."

Been thinking that Ruiz does much better than expected over the first half. All the pieces for a major let down for Joshua are there though thinking shocking upset is a biiiig ol stretch. But I think Ruiz will find him often and may even be up on cards before his face falls apart and the roof falls in on the huge underdog.

So so undercard. Josh Taylor v Ray Robinson might turn into a decent little scrap. Glad Robinson is getting the shot after being screwed by the judges last time out.

Periban hasbeenthe distance with Badou Jack, Yildirim & Bika before but was banged out by Degale in a few rounds.

Had to hey technically I was right , Ruiz Jr was ahead at the time of the stoppage

Helluva fight on re watch. Breaking a guy down is accurate and Ruiz proved a seriously underrated boxer, he kept him measured throughout. What I worry the most now are the alphabet boys and when does the stripping or fast mandatories begin? Division and plans have been turned right on their heads.

Another feather in the cap of Manny Robles, the trainer of Ruiz, and son of the legendary Chato Robles. He is a great guy and very astute; he certainly made the right choice when he walked away from Breazeale some time back.
