It is a complex issue. In many ways they may hold the key to fighting climate change because of the investments they are making in research but on the other hand their environmental track record is appalling and they are well and truly fucking over Australia and Africa in exploiting them mercilessly for resources.
The Africa-China thing is mental. No wonder so many Americans are paranoid as hell.
