No, actually to ME the excessive taxation on cigarettes leads to people like Mr. Garner subverting the laws. I actually agree with Mr. Garner and think his death was needless and preventable, but the Mayor of NYC wanted his tax dollars and he and he alone told the police to crack down, the police had their hand forced and Mr. Garner made the poor decision to resist arrest and he wound up dead.

They had a retrial. Slager got the state to drop the murder charge by pleading guilty.

The judge determined that Slager was guilty of second-degree murder. That meant he could not give him less than 19 years.

Some of Slager’s fellow officers n supervisors, said that Slager did what he was supposed to do. 6 on the jury were unwilling to find him guilty even of manslaughter.

In December 2017, Slager was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the judge determining the underlying offense was second-degree murder.

First degree murder means it's premeditated.
