The other players who are in the 'who is the greatest' debate - Pele, Messi, Cryuff, di Stefano etc - were all playing with and surrounded by teammates of real quality .... Maradona was the only elite player I have seen who single handedly carried fairly mediocre teams all the way to the very top.

It's a shame, for him, that his personality and lifestyle off the pitch was Mike Tyson-esqu!
The only one close in terms of dribbling, hard tackles and muddy pitches but still great was George Best.

Maradona, past his best, still got Argentina to 1990 final. He was high as a kite for the 1994 world cup, you could tell from the way he ran to the TV camera and celebrated that goal.

Pele would be the only one higher because he was involved in 4 world cups winning 3 of them but he had great players in his team.
