To be fair Canelo fighting another Mexican is kinda like bringing sand to the beach. But by Mexicans he most likely means Mexican born and raised, as opposed to Mexican-Americans. I'm just kinda guessing there.

There has always been a rivalry there, with people from Mexico rooting against American-born Mexicans when they face each other. Some even refer to Mexican Americans as "Gabachos" (a not so polite word for foreigner)

I see this as, not Canelo being scared more Canelo saying "You don't want any of this smoke hermano" He doesn't want to derail young Mexican fighters career. He wants Munguia to be able to continue to eat. Canelo will destroy Munguia or Benvaidez (Who is of Ecuadorian and Mexican hertiage) if they meet. Instead of putting countrymen against each other he wants to help lift them up.

But I think its misplaced love for his people. He can be givng his people a $15 million dollar payday they might never get. He could have faced Gilberto Ramirez, David Benavidez, Jaime Munguia, sure he probably he beats them all but he would've also made them all rich. $45 Million dollars that could have went into his own people hands.

But Cubans openly prefer to not fight each other. Prince Naz once said he wouldn't fight another brother (Muslim boxer) like him. So Canelo will continue to fight these brittle weak Euro white boys. But if no Mexican's then he better fight slick black fighters like Charlo and Andrade.

If it has a trinket, favorable terms and a pulse Canelo will afford it a stage. Someone get the threat of David Benavidez a wig and officially change his name to 'Ronald' .

Ronald Benavidez still sounds Mexican. Might not fly.

He won’t be fighting any Slick Black fighters either.

Tiny, past it Mayweather defeat still gives him nightmares.

His path is BJS, Plant then the GGG trilogy at 168.

Canelo won’t be moving down unless it’s a huge cash fight against a post Ugas unified smaller Spence.
