What's not to like? He's personable... he's articulate... and he's identifiable for young people looking up to him. But when fame and hype precede the substance... that's where I have a problem. One good fight does not a star make. If so, we'd be flooded with phenoms with household names... calling themselves King, TBE, GOAT, etc. People are so hungry for a handsome young megastar (again... it doesn't hurt he's from the USA), that they'll jump on the bandwagon quicker than you can blink. Nobody's begrudging him his mental health issues. But too bad for the legions of past fighters that didn't have the luxury to cry "mental illness" and be given a pass from unexplained absences or subpar performances. Yeah... those were brutal times... but also times when fighters had to scratch and claw to get the type of notoriety Ryan seems to be getting for free. Then calling out Pac, FFS... A kid with barely 20 fights and one good fight under his belt.... calling out a legend. Shouldn't these things have to be earned? Sooo glad that never came off. If I were Pac's agent I would've never returned his calls in the first place. Time will tell. But anyone who starts off with that silver spoon in their mouths, courtesy of the media... already has two strikes with fans like me.

Ryan Garcia‘s goal is ‘to become world champion this year’, boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya has claimed.

Garcia, 23, will begin his comeback trail on his way back to the top of the sport against Emmanuel Tagoe.

The former WBC interim lightweight champion has not fought since his knockout victory over Luke Campbell in January 2021.

But according to De La Hoya, his goal is to become the real thing by the end of the year.

De La Hoya told DAZN: “The vision is to become world champion this year.

“That’s the bottom line. Like you have Kambosos fighting Haney, which I believe was confirmed. That’s going to be a great fight.

“And so, we’re going to look at the winner very carefully, and see what happens.

“But it’s a great fight, Kambosos-Haney. Who knows, maybe the winner?

“Or maybe we go a different route. Maybe we start negotiations with Tank Davis you know. I’m waiting for his promoter Al Haymon to give me a call and let’s make that fight happen.

“Why not? We’re here. We’re ready.

“But first thing is first April 9.”

If Garcia wins, he is likely to land a big-name fight such as Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney and George Kambosos Jr.

De La Hoya insisted, however, that this doesn’t mean that he is completely taking his eye off the ball when it comes to his opponent as he is well aware of the fact that he cannot to slip up.

Tagoe last fought in November 2020 and has not lost since losing on his debut over 15 years ago.

He carries a record of 32 wins and 1 loss with 15 of his victories coming by way of knockout.

De La Hoya added: “He’s fighting a guy who has nothing to lose.

“I think Ryan needs to come out and make a point but do it smart and careful.

“Ryan knows what he is doing. He’s a professional. He’s been there before so it’s going to be an interesting fight.

“Joe Goossen has been in the game for so many years. I’m glad they made the connection.”
