In Mundines defense, whilst he is cocky and outspoken, brash and narcisisstic in front of the media, he is humble, generous and a quiet gentleman outside of the ring. The reason he gets a bad rap from the public (expecially in Australia) is because of the way he promotes himself. When you see him talking himself up, he is merely building his image, getting people interested in him, talking about him, hating him, loving him, etc etc...and that is why he is the one of, if not the most profitable promoters in Australia. He is business smart and cares little about his public image because he is onfident of the person that he really is...he knows his friends and family love and respect him, and to him, everything else matters little.
And anyway...who is Danny Green without Mundine? Mundine gave Green fame. Mundine gave Green his retirement plan.
Mundine was the same when he played Rugby League. He promoted himself as the best five eighth going around. And at the time he probably was. Only he never got selected to reprasent Australia because of his mouth.
What you dont see of Mundine is the work he does for his community and in particular the Aboriginal people. He has donated his time and plenty of money to various causes and asks for nothing in return. He wont talk this up, or get the media involved...he doesnt have to. Its unimportant. He doesnt drink. Doesnt smoke. Doesnt do drugs. Isn't involved in crime or anything shady. He is a great role model for his people, which unfortunately they need badly.
As a massive fan of Rugby League (the 2nd most brutal sport in the world) i never liked him much. Early in his career i never liked him much. But as i came to realise who the person behind "the man" was, my opinion of him slowly began to change. Now i have a lot of respect for him. His skills get better with every fight. Given how long he has been boxing, he can only get better. He would make Lacy look like an amateur. He would test Kessler big time, if not beat him if there were to be a rematch. And who knows...might even get a belt one day...
I can only wish the guy all the best. But i do wish he wasnt so cocky...just i can understand why he is...
