Teofimo Lopez has vacated his light-welterweight world title less than a week after winning the belt by beating Josh Taylor.
Lopez, 25, announced his retirement after handing Taylor his first professional loss when the pair fought in New York last weekend. The American became a two-weight world champion by capturing Taylor's WBO belt and his retirement was questioned by many fans, but Lopez has proved he is serious about hanging up his gloves by opting to give up his newly-acclaimed belt.
“Just now Teofimo Lopez is texting me that he relinquished his Jr welterweight title," WBO President Paco Valcárcel tweeted. "We should respect his decision. If he comes back, WBO doors will be always open for him." Lopez responded to the statement by writing: “Thank you everyone for making the greatest moments in my career a great one! I am forever grateful for all of the sanctioning bodies in boxing for showing me I can and am more than boxing! What a career.”

Boxers love the adulation from the fans. That includes "retiring" so fans will then beg for him to "come back." Then they say "oh, what the hell" and come triumphantly back... when they never actually retired in the first place. It's a weird game, unique to boxing, I think. Fans lap it up... playing along and believing everything their idols say. Some of us are so desensitized to that... it's just so much white noise. Like "yeah yeah yeah... so when's his next fight?"
Maybe he's also trying to up his dollar value. He's already thrown some outlandish numbers out there... knowing in the end he'll have to settle for somewhat less. It's all part of the game.
Benn called out Taylor on Sunday afternoon on his Instagram story.
"Josh Taylor I'd happily give you your third beating on the spin. Don't play with me," Benn said.
Taylor quickly clapped back, making reference to Benn's two previous failed drugs tests, as he said: "Must be the roid rage kicking in? Or is that the pregnancy hormones?"
This was before Benn responded once again, saying: "I wouldn't throw stones if I was you... Josh Taylor I get you want your last payday before retirement [clown emoji]."
Taylor finished with: "You won't be fighting anywhere anytime soon. But, I'll happily fight you."
Although, according to Benn's promoter, Eddie Hearn, he will be fighting in September against Chris Eubank Jr.
