In late-1987, many anticipated that Mike McCallum would move upward to middleweight, which had become a very wide open playing field in the wake of Hagler/Leonard. Coming off of his shocking shellacking of the once thought-to-be invincible Donald Curry in defense of his junior middleweight title, McCallum was a decided threat to annex one of the titles.

About this very point in time, Sumbu Kalambay, an extremely talented dark horse middleweight, had been quietly climbing the ratings ladder and amassing valuable experience on the world stage. This culminated with a box-off for the vacant WBA Middleweight Title against the dangerous and streaking Iran Barkley.

Kalambay won the WBA Middleweight Title and was rewarded with a 1st title defence against the undefeated and decided favorite, Mike McCallum.
