Hopes for Harrison title defence

Scott Harrison's defence of his featherweight title could be back on after it emerged that he will be released from a Spanish jail.
The troubled boxer is set to return to Scotland on Saturday.

Barry Hughes, Harrison's manager, said discussions were underway to get the defence of his title against Nicky Cook in London next month back on track.

"We spoke to both the WBO and our legal team and they gave us the answer we wanted," Hughes said.

The World Boxing Organisation had already said the Scot would be stripped of his featherweight title.

But Hughes said he was confident the fight could now go ahead as planned.

However, Harrison must pass a medical with the British Boxing Board of Control before promoter Frank Warren can restore the fight to the ExCel Arena bill.

And Hughes added: "I spoke to Scott through the lawyers in Spain and he knows he is getting out now and he has been training hard.

"We spoke to Frank Warren to ensure the fight was still on.

"He was more than willing to put the fight back on on 9 December."

However, Warren added a note of caution.

"It is not necessarily the case that the fight is back on," he said.

"Scott has been released from prison and has a contract to fight and we have to honour that contract.

"But it is subject to the fighter passing a medical, so he has to get through those first and he will see a doctor from the BBBC on Monday."

As I mentioned in the other thread, I reckon that this will ask so much of Harrison, and even if he does get the go ahead from all of the licensing bodies etc, he will have a damn hard time in making the weight, and then getting himself past Nicky Cook, who isn't a mug at all. If Harrison comes out in January 07 with the WBO Super Featherwieght belt around his weight, then he will have shown character and heart beyond compare. This is his adversity, and if he can show courage and a champion's heart to remain the champion, then I don't see why he can;t go on to bigger and better things. If he loses the title, he can join me in the gutter.

Yes agreed, but he has no other option it is terrible preperation for a huge Title fight but if he pulls out his career is as good as over, i fancy Cook for this more and more now.

Dude, as a fellow boozer, I feel a little more sympathy to him than most, because today's society has far too many opportunities to get wasted. Indeed, otherwise, how would our friends Ozzy Osbourne and Paul Gascoigne have survived. Ah well, least they showed their colours and did what their reputation always suggested.

The outcome is pretty predictable. Warren will succeed in getting in getting the fight back on. The WBO will decide not to strip Harrison. And extension will be than given to Harrison allow him to get in to shape. Two weeks before the fight, Harrison will get arrested again. Harrison will be in jail, the fight will be postponed and this process will start all over.

Personally, I think that Harrisn will just about be able to make the weight, simply out of his dedication to the cause, and his ability to drag himself out of adversity into a winning position. He is a strong fighter, even if it is a pub brawl cause a friend spilt a drink over his posh jacket. Personally, I think he will just about have enough to come back and claim the title before one last title bout with JMM, which would make a cracker of a PPv, even if i do live in Britain, where PPv's are rare!

ITV don't have a method of putting out a PPV, plus, the ratings ITV could pull with the fight on a Saturday evening would be collosal. Easy 6-8 million, but Harrison is nothing like a household name. Frank Warren could have done mega business if he'd kept Hatton, but thats what you get for not being a fighters' promoter, unlike Dennis Hobson.
