If there's anything that can make a dent in the conspiracy theory that there's an all powerful deep state out there that controls everything and that Trump is taking on single handedly it's the ongoing clusterfuck with Biden.
You can't make a sitting president stand down if he doesn't want to as we're now seeing. It was clear after the debate that he'd have to go and I said so but he's going out kicking and screaming. Hopefully over the next few days he saves what dignity he has left and says he won't be the nominee. Looking very likely now but if he doesn't he'll be attacked in public with increasing unpleasantness by all senior Democrats until he does and it'll be suboptimal.
You can't manufacture candidates otherwise every political party all over the world would manufacture the perfect candidate for every election. All you have is a bunch of flawed human beings. In America you get public beauty contests which is not the case in most countries where the party greybeards and/or elected members choose a leader. Shame they don't do that in America.
It looks like the Democrats don't have the stomach to have some sort of truncated television primary debates and are just going to coalesce behind Harris. One thing about Trump and Biden, they talk like regular people. You get one chance to make a first impression and the minute she opens her mouth and starts talking about lived experiences and burdens and so on she allows the GOP to pigeonhole her as a DEI hire hopelessly out of her depth, not ready for primetime and what have you.
Up to now basically everything she says sounds like it's been written by a committee of lefty activist groups, use this trendy phrase, don't use this judgy word, this word is now verboten and can't be used and so on. People like that sound like aliens to normal people and her job here is to win floating and undecided voters. That's a lot different from winning a race in California where getting elected isn't in doubt and winning the primary is the tricky bit. Being able to say the things California Democrats want to hear does not translate to a national audience and you would hope there's somebody on the Biden campaign team competent enough to know all this and give her a makeover.
They need somebody who can't be tied to the Biden years (basically the burst of inflation which is by far the biggest reason voters turned away from Biden) but they're not going to have the balls to do it. They'll lose less badly with Harris than they would with Biden but they'll still lose. Hopefully they throw it open and hold tv debates but I'm not optimistic. Doesn't matter if it upsets Democratic voters. As the prospect of another four years of no guardrails Trump looms they'll get behind the nominee. It's the floating and undecided voters that will decide the election and the Democrats have much better options than Harris who will probably blow it one of the first times she opens her mouth.
