Maybe it's easy in hindsight but Qawi didn't get the appreciation due overall. Not only had an underrated reflex and will forever be tied into a legendary ATG war with young Holyfield. But made his own path prior with little to no amateur time and tied directly to the 70's '175 golden era'. Passing of the torch from Saad and the next generation. Rest easy Champion.
Dwight Muhammad Qawi story is amazing as he only took up boxing at 25 years of age in prison serving time for armed robbery. He became champion stopping the great Matthew Saad Muhammad and beating him again in a title defence.
Qawi lost to one of the great light heavyweights Micheal Spinks and went on to win a cruiserweight title and losing to another great, Evander Holyfield in an action packed 15 rounder by split decision.
Qawi was short and stocky with a bob and weave style where he used the cross-arm defence which worked a treat when he within punching distance of his opponents. He was relentless and his contest with Real Deal is an all time classic.
RIP champ.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
