    Default Calzaghe dismisses Manfredo boast

Joe Calzaghe is unfazed by Peter Manfredo Jnr's threat that he will be the one to end the Welshman's reign as WBO super middleweight champion.
Manfredo, who rose to fame on reality television series 'The Contender', says he will get the better of Calzaghe in their Cardiff bout next March.

Calzaghe told the ESPN website: "He's well known in America and a tough kid.

Calzaghe sounded like a chump when he said: "There is a world of difference between being a reality TV star and a world champion boxer. "He has only seen the glitz and glamour of the sport - now he is in for the real thing."

If your'e such high caliber, Joe, WTF are you doing fighting him?

    One disgusted American fan.

There is no up side to this. A true boxing fan knows that & the casuals that saw Mora spank Manfredo are going to be scratching their heads on Joe win, lose, or draw.

This my fellow posters is something I thought the world would never see: "Bullshit knee deep high to a giraffe."

As humans we tend to look at things for their immediate benefits, but Joe Calzaghe doesnt have a large fanbase in America. Not many Americans are willing to pay to watch the Welshman in action. This fight is going to attract the American causual fans who recognize Peter Manfredo, hes one of the biggest names in boxing right now in America. Seriously if you ask a causal fan to name their favorite boxers you will hear stuff like ODLH, Mike Tyson, Gatti, Mora, Manfredo because the Contender got alot of people into boxing.

This fight is too help the Taylor fight happen in the future.

But Calzaghe said: "There is a world of difference between being a reality TV star and a world champion boxer.

"He has only seen the glitz and glamour of the sport - now he is in for the real thing."

He now holds career-high world rankings of number seven by the World Boxing Organization and eight by the World Boxing Council.
Joes own words makes him look like a chump, I just posted rankings from all the sanctioning bodies and Manfredo's name was not in any top ten and wasn't even in the top 15 of the WBO. Maybe he and his promoter just purchased rankings for Manfredo so it would look like Manfredo belongs in the ring fighting for the championship.

Hoping Manfredo beats the hell out of him, not likely but I can still hope.

the big names, yeah he'll probably fight Taylor next and beat him(imo) but then is he going

Even though I'm the biggest Calzaghe fan there is, this is nothing more than another warm-up, after having to take a break thanks to Bika's sharp head. At the end of the day, the fights that we're waiting for are Kessler, Taylor and perhaps either B-Hop or RJJ in these last few fights of Joe C's career. Make em happen Frank!

I hope so . I think Joe vs Taylor is one of the biggest fights in boxing from a importance/significance perspective . Joe will be top 3 p4p if he wins that 1

Calzaghe will absolutely annihilate Manfredo. A very silly fight really, but if Calzaghe: Taylor is to follow then I may well be appeased for a while longer!

That will be great, but is Joe gonna move down to fight him? Or is this gonna be at Supermiddle? I don't understand why he picked Manfredo, he is not a big enough name to justify a PPV in the states and he
is not seasoned enough to be a NAME on his record. If I was in Joe's shoes and being as close to retirement as he is I would be looking for the best fights of my career that would benefit my legacy. Kessler has earned the shot.

Fight Kessler damnit. Oh well I guess Joe is just like every other boxer at this weight and heavier, they just bide
their time not making the best fights and just looking for easy W's.

I agree if Taylor is next that will change my view, but Manfredo? Really? Maybe in 2 or 3 years this would be worthwhile.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

It is only worthwhile if Taylor really is up next, if not then that is beyond tolerance...3 hand me downs in a row??

That would be inexcusable to anyone....

I'm hoping that Manfredo beats him. I've always liked Manfredo and even though he did come from a reality show, he has tried to continue to better himself with Freddie Roach, and he has always wanted to be truly respected in the sport. The guy easily could fight some alright boxers in Providence every 3 months and make a bunch of money, but he's trying to do something great. I want to see Manfredo win. JoeCal on the other hand hasn't really fought anybody in a while, Jeff Lacy was green as hell and took a beating, he's trying to get American dollars and respect. But becoming the undisputed champ at 168 would do more for his rep over here than beating Manfredo. Beating Manfredo might increase his visibility in the States though, but is it really worth it? He's losing respect by minute. Also, if JoeCal has a tough fight with Manfredo, it's gonna look really bad for him. People aren't tuning into this fight routing for JoeCal, people are tuning into see if Manfredo is the real deal. Manfredo's expectations are gonna be low for the most part. If Manfredo even puts up a good fight and wins three or four rounds, then it's a huge loss for JoeCal because of his statements about Peter being from the Contender. I'm excited about the fight though just to see how the Contender stacks up against the real thing.
