I was in my 30s when Pryor was at his best. Which great Light welter did he beat, I honestly cant see what the fuss is all about with him. Would somebody please explain

Looking at Pryor in terms of boxing skill, I agree with you that he was not special in that regard. overall I'd rate some of the fighters on the list higher than him. But for a short stretch of Pryor's career in the early 80's, I think he could of beat anybody. To me it looked like there was no stopping the guy. Regardless of what was thrown at him he'd walk right through it. The relentless pressure Pryor applied was unreal.
More than once when Pryor was fighting back then, I'd let out one those Monty Python King Aurther cries of "JEEEEEESUS CHRIST".

True, Pryor doesnt have any great light welters on his list, but there was talk back then of Pryor moving to 147 for fights with Leonard and Hearns. Tommy and Ray wouldnt even acknowledge the guy. I dont think they wanted any part of him, and I think Tommy had enough of Pryor in the amatuers. I'm not say he'd beat Ray or Tommy, but I dont either wanted any part of him.

I have a link somewhere of the fight between Hearns and Pryor at 132 when they were amatuers. If you're interested I'll put it up for you.

Here is the link to the amatuer Pryor/Hearns fight. It doesnt prove anything in regards to this thread, but its still fun to watch.

I guess my screename kind of gives away who I'm going to choose.
Pernell didn't spend too much time at 140, but he beat Chavez (the only people who don't think he won are those two judges) in front of an overwhelmingly pro-Chavez crowd.
Tszyu is a great puncher, but Pernell would've outboxed him. He would never have walked in to a big right like Judah did.
Whitaker-Mayweather would be an amazing matchup. Neither of those guys ever fought someone who could match their speed, it would be great to see them face each other. It would be really close, but I'll always take the southpaw who's committed to the jab over the conventional fighter who relies more on hooks and crosses.
I'm too young to know much about Pryor or Benitez, but from the limited clips I've seen of Pryor, Pernell would've outboxed him in my opinion.
And the thing people never mention about Pernell is what a great chin he had. He never had to show it in his prime because he never got hit. But he was a bloated, drug abusing 35-year-old when he fought Tito, and he absorbed all of Tito's best punches for 12 rounds.

The thing about Pernell and this applys to that sought of Boxer he stopped the other guy from fighting, and it doesnt go down well with the general public or people who dont know boxing. You only seem to get one every generation like him, to keep reminding us of what boxing is all about skill first and formost. Every boxer would love to have his skills but they never will, he could stand on a dime and make you miss. Which he had to not being a puncher, a joy to watch

I saw the title of the thread and hoped I would be able to give a Sweet Pea shout out. In a prime P4P fight against anybody ever to fight at 140, I will take Sweet Pea to win. He was an absolute marvel to watch. I mean mindblowing. There have been plenty greater fighters who have fought in the boxing game (in terms of victories and stuff) but he was in the mold with Robinson, Ali, Leonard, De La Hoya and all the other boxers who you just had to watch everytime out.

If you want to see one of the greatest displays of boxing master class, watch the McGirt - Whitaker fights. Much is made of Buddy as a trainer but he was a hell of a boxer, a pure boxer and he got boxed circles around.

Great point. Two classically trained boxers going against one another and showing off all their skills. Just great pure sweet science. McGirt started off strong both times, but by the late rounds Pernell reduced him to target practice, especially the second time. Those may have been Pernell's best performances, better than the Chavez fight.

Kostya Tszyu was the best Jr Welterweight Champion ever.. in my opinion. J C Chavez is right there in the pocket at a close 2nd. Ricky Hatton could close the gap in a few years. I love Hatton's balls to the wall, mauling style. Ricky brings it 100% for the entire stretch of the match !

I've been thinking about this and isn't Tszyu over rated? I don't really see any big names on his resume, more decent fighters but that's it.Someone fill me in!

Kosta was the best amatuer I had seen, well one of them.Probably not a good idea him staying in Australia he didnt evolve like he should have. He was a typical American fighter, out of Russia
