In the heat of the moment I was blaming Toney and his lack of output and no obvious sign of condition improvement, but you are right that Sam Peter deserves his props for showing improved skills and getting a difficult job done.
He is a match for all bar Wlad at the moment, but a few fights down the line I might even be pushing Peter to have a chance..
Boxing can make you old overnight, and that's what happened to Toney. He had nothing. I scored it 119-108. 11 rounds to 1 for Peter, with a two-point round in the 2nd because of the knockdown, which was caused by a jab surprisingly enough. The only round I gave to Toney was the 3rd.
I had Toney winning the first fight 8 rounds to 4, but he did none of the things last night that he did in the first fight. Toney's days as a serious contender are over IMO and he should call it a career, because it's been a very good, maybe great, career. I'm sure he'll keep fighting though.
I did get a laugh out of Toney claiming that he won and it was a bad decision. Way to lose gracefully.
Okay...so the dust has settled, the alcoholic haze diminished a little into the mist of the hangover, and now I am demanding MORE! Has nayone found highlights of this fight anywhere? Is it on youtube?

If you thought Toney won a clear victory last time out a mere 3 months ago I really can't see why you think his days as a serious contender are now over?Originally Posted by SweetPea
If the last few years have shown us anything, it's that the heavyweight division is in such a poor state right now that a fighter only needs to win one fight to put themselves right back in contention.
Just look at the the list of bums, a la Briggs, Maskaev, Harrison, Guinn, McCline, etc.
All Toney needs to do is beat one fighter and he's back in the mix.
He'll still have plenty of options, a rematch with Holyfield, a rematch with Jones Jr, a big showdown with Hopkins or Tarver, a fight against a tough contender liker Chagaev, Lyakhovich, Brewster etc.
It wouldn't suprise me at all if he fought another title eliminator by the end the end of the year.
Toney is still one of the biggest draws in boxing.
Personally I can't see him ever volountarily retiring. He'll be like Roberto Duran still fighting when he's 50 and only a car crash type incident will make him quit.
But the thing is...you have to recognize the fact that that is all a part of a vicious circle that the fans started also.
If a fighter has one bad night...he's out...& if a fighter has one good night...he's back in. It's not just the said state bu also...it's the state of us as fans.
Peter took a lot of harsh criticism & him being only a prospect to start. That's just wrong. Peter was just coming up & lost (& not too badly I might add) against Wlad (top man) & he was written off as a worthless puncher & that it was time to hunt a new saviour.
That's just shit.
He beat Toney the first time...& he did...& he beat him the second.
I haven't read all the other sites this morning...but you can rest assured that Toney is now being called old & that is how Peter was able to box against him last night.
Again...horse shit. Peter has improved & if he continues to do so...he will be hell...either way...as I have always said...I like Peter & he deserves much more credit than he deserves all the flack.
Good for you Peter.

Like you Bilbo, I am a huge Toney fan (okay not as big as him, but....) his punch output is slipping, he is getting hit heavily. I watched the Holy: Toney fight again tonight to remind myself of what it was I enjoyed about Toney. Most of that was missing from this fight. He wasnt evasive, he was too heavy again, and the extra muscle gave no signs of extra power....Originally Posted by bilbo
He was actually dominated in this fight. Peter learned and Toney didnt and at this stage that is very dangerous for Toney.
Im a Toney fan but I realise at this stage that the belly is just sheer ludicrousy!!
Hey babe...fwock what your friends say...we all loves ya here!Originally Posted by amat

Anywho, Peter hurt Toney in Round 1 with that big ass right & I knew it was pretty much it. THen when Peter dropped him in the second...I knew my guy meant biz.
It was beautiful.
babe.

I'm not gonna make excuses peter won and i honestly believe that toney is done. Now i guess i gotta root for peter to take over the division![]()
You know...I think we already got our king of the heavies...he's just yet to put on the crown & sit in the throne...& that's Wlad, like it or not.Originally Posted by Punisher136
Thing about Peter...I want him to run the division...but he still needs improvement. I'm glad that he dispatched Toney...but as I have said in the past...Toney has done nothing at 200+ to impress me.
Peter could cross paths with Brewster in 2 months & Peter could be singing Nigerian bedtime stories under the lightbulbs of the Garden...one never knows.
Peter needs a GOOD TRAINER!!!! I can not pray for this enough.

Being a contender IMO is someone who has a legit shot to beat the champ. Right now the champ is Kiltschko, I don't care how many people hold random belts, Klitschko is the guy. At his advanced age, I don't think Toney can handle someone of Klitscko's size and modest skills. Klitschko's achilles heel is his chin, but Toney is not a dangerous puncher at this age and weight. He landed the hardest right hands he could throw flush on Peter's chin, and Peter didn't even flinch. Now Wlad has a weaker chin than Peter, but Toney will not be able to seriously hurt him.Originally Posted by bilbo
Toney is a natural light heavy or cruiserweight who also has small hands. He needs to outbox people and at this age I can't see him outworking Wlad over 12 rounds. Generally the most glaring example of a fighter getting old is a huge decrease in activity. Old fighters just can't put up big punch outputs. Toney threw very few punches last night.
Also, as we saw in plain view last night, Peter has clearly surpassed Toney. If Toney can't beat Wlad or Peter, then he's not a serious threat to anyone. Just because he could hang with Briggs or Maskaev or Guinn doesn't mean anything.
I just can't accept wlad as a potentially undisputed champion of the division. I'l agree he's the best out there but that in itself is a travisty.Originally Posted by wacko3205
Why? Because he's got 3 losses out of 50 fights? He's been knocked out only once legitimately? I just don't understand. I mean...he's knocked out 42 men & he keeps on cracking...again...just curious.Originally Posted by Punisher136
