    Default Who's Floyd Mayweather?

That's usually the reply you'll get if you ask a nonboxing fan what they think of Floyd Mayweather.
So why can't the best boxer in the world gain any mainstream popularity at all today?

Is it because of the state of the sport in the mainstream in general? Is it because there really are no stars in sports today like there were 20 years ago?
Well no, because a guy like Oscar De La Hoya still garners plenty of coverage and attention when he's in the ring. And news always surrounds Tyson even if he's not fighting. So there is still general interest in the sweet science and boxers when the media wants to.

Is it the trickle down effect? The fact that there's no interest in the heavyweight division right now, the rest of boxing suffers because of it?
When Muhammad Ali was hitting the end of his career, nobody thought there'd be another marquee star in the sport again. Then all of a sudden guys like Hagler and Leonard started reaching prominence in the mainstream media. And as they were ending their careers, in comes Tyson. And Lewis. And Holyfield. And Oscar. Then Naz. So there's always been a spot for boxers out there.

Is it Mayweather's style? The fact that he doesn't knockout guys in sensational fashion, he doesn't win over the mainstream's hunger for KOs? Is it his attitude? Or the fact that he hasn't been in a war? The fact that he doesn;t endorse a popular soft drink?

Why does nobody outside of the sport know who Floyd Mayweather Jr. is?

I think it is boxings fault for not pushing it's brightest star.....It would be like the NFL not having Brett Favre, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning....Boxing needs to get back into the mainstream TV...no more cable....that is why boxing doesn't flourish....

    Good post !

Well I can say that top British boxers are known throughout our nation

Bruno, Hatton, Naz, Henry Cooper, Chris Eubank.

The reason for that is because they also do a lot for the community normally, and also they appear on lots of popular televsion shows and spend time attending events, opening things, and being general philanthropists for the country (helping others who are disadvantaged in some way for example)

I know Tyson did a lot of that also

They are all very personable and decent people who you can have opening schools etc or as guests on family TV shows.

So why is Mayweather not known - well what has he done for anyone apart from himself?? and would you like him on mainstream TV as a role model for how grown ups should speak in public and how you would like everyone in the world to speak with each other like he does

    I rest my case

true...His "I'm so friggin great" personality has slowed the public to warming up to him...also he's not in any commercials or known to attend charity events or functions......His PR guy needs fired.....

    Exactly!! CC for that.....

People can not blame boxing.....Do you think that the NFL pushes their players alone??...Just as Big Ragu mentioned about charity events...Commercials ect....Players do public service announcements ect........People like to see athletes acting as regular people...they like to know their heads are not swollen to the max....There was a time everyone new the big names...in the 80's Hagler did commercials,,Leonard,,Hearns,,Holmes,,,and boxing does not get them PR people do...Plus Floyd has an attitudeproblem...You can't spend your time telling everyone how great you are...no one wants to hear that out of your mouth everytime they see your face on camera what happens is people tune you out

    cc all round. Great points.
But then you take a guy like Ali who all he talked about was how great he was early on in his career.
Or even more recently Naz who always carried the arrogance with him. You either loved them or you hated them, but the bottom line was at least they were at least known. Whether you tuned in to watch them win or get their blocked knocked off, you wanted to see what they were gonna do.
So if Floyd's gonna be a bad boy, why can't he be a better known villain?

Good point....But Ali was also very Charismatic....He would claim to be the greatest but it was how he presentd it....Most of the time he did it in a very joking manner....also Ali was very charitable...ans like I mentioned before he very much mingled with the common man...you often saw Ali walking the streets meeting people shaking hands ect........Floyd is just outright Cockey all the time not just during press conferences and during interviews about the fights themselves......And for a long time Ali was a very Hated man....Hard to compare Ali to anyone when it comes to things like that because there were so many different things involved in his career...The war racisim in the 60's...PBF is just out right arrogant all the time....Ali also gave his opponents respect they deserved after fights he would clown them not put down their abilities

, sorry, but have a sadclick for being seriously misinformed. My mom even knows who Floyd Mayweather is and she knows about as much about boxing as Mother Theresa. Just because people don't watch someone doesn't mean they don't know who that person is. If you ask a non boxing fan who Floyd Mayweather is, 85% of the time they'll be able to tell you at least that he's a boxer.

I'm afraid I have to agree with skyler. I noticed the thread starter has the female sex sign under her name so that would probably explain this warped post. Not to be sexist, but when people speak of non boxing fans, they're usually speaking of men who happen to watch other sports and don't watch boxing, and I can tell you I know plenty of them, and they all know not only Floyd Mayweather, but also Roy Jones, Antonio Tarver, Arturo Gatti, Fernando Vargas, Bernard Hopkins, and James Toney. A woman not knowing Floyd Mayweather really doesn't mean much, as most women don't know Albert Puljos, Amare Stoudamire, Ladanian Tomlinson, or other athletes who rank in the upper echelon of their respective sport.

Where are you from and what sort of coverage does he get there?
I'm from Canada. Maybe that'd explain it.
But after a Mayweather fight, there's not even a small blurb in the paper the next day about his fight.
Our sports shows don't talk about him.
The only way you really know of him is if you watch boxing.

I'm from America sweetheart, and you being Canadian would explain alot, considering Lennox won you all an Olympic gold medal and went into the ring as a pro with Great Britain's flag. No offense, but Canadians are hardly a priority when sports publicists here, or anywhere for that matter, are targeting a mass audience.

I wasn't talking about men who watch other sports but not boxing, though. I was talking about the mainstream media in general.
If I was talking about men who watch other sports but not boxing, I would've said men who watch other sports but not boxing.
But I said mainstream a few times in my post.
You don't have to be a man who watches other sports but not boxing to know who Oscar De La Hoya is. Or even a Prince Naseem.
I usually hang around an arty community offline and on and people who don't really follow sports much at all. But they knew who Naz was. They know De La Hoya. So my question was why can't Floyd reach that kind of stature.
Not whether men who watch other sports but not boxing know who Floyd is.

    haha no offense taken
It's no secret we have no money here
I started a poll in another forum. A world-wide non-boxing related community to pique my curiousity if the world really does know who Floyd Mayweather is though!
If 85% of them know who he is, I'll post a picture of myself eating my hat.
