Haven't had a chance to see too much of Berto and I know he is still pretty young, but what I have seen would make an interesting match up with Cotto. Anyone else think so?

I know he is green but I have watch this kid fight 3 times and he is fast as hell very skilled and OMG Powerfull Mofo this kid is gonna give anyone s lot of troube and yes including Cotto.
Right now HBO is showcasing this Kid and that will see as a oportunity to see him how he developes while he faces better competition. I hope I'm right on this Kid I also hope dibella do a good job preparing him.
I know don't make fun of me talking like Lampley

Well, see this is the way I see it....
If you face Berto against Cotto now and Cotto beats him it proves what? Nothing cause people will say the same thing they said about Quintana that he was still green and inexperienced. Same thing when he beat Pinto, Torres and Malignaggi. The Cotto haters said they were all inexperienced fighters who weren't ready and they were over hyped by the media.... Berto now is allover the boxing media and is everyones fav. prospect at 147 (Don't blame them the kids got talent) but if you face him with Cotto and he loses I know exactly what everyone will say, cause I've heard it before...
Same goes for when Margarito faced Kyvelos & Cintron, the talks were that both Cintron & Kyvelos had youth & power to beat and give Margarito trouble but they didn't, once he beat them then everyone said they were too green and inexperienced....
And judging from Bertos body structure and what he weighs on fight now I don't think he'll be there much longer if I'm honest... I think 154 suits him better.... I got a feeling the kids struggling a little making 147....
It'll be to soon for Berto. He needs to step up the competition before even thinking about jumping to Cotto.
Trust me Mick, he has no problem making weight, He was eating a cheese steak just last week, he trains real hard and he's young with a fast metabolism. Berto's a BEAST!!!. Eventually he will move up to 154ibs, but thats probably a few years away.Originally Posted by CutMeMicK

And when I say 'vs who' I don't only mean top tier opponents but also journeymen with difficult styles
Berto is another 12 months away from really stepping up to world level.
If that sounds a long time just be glad he's not managed by Frank Warren, else we would have to wait another 5 years.
Well, you might be right about the weight BUT just never know really if he will stay there, if his management team see he can do bigger and better things at 154 I'm sure they'll have a word with him about it....Originally Posted by atomic bull
Take BCDawson for example he started at Middleweight, he then as I suspected moved to SMW and everyone including myself said this will be the div. he reigns and will stay at, next thing you know hes fighting at Ligh Heavy. never indications of weight problems or anything like as I looked closer into this since I had been following BCD for a minute now, something became aparent that at Middle & SMW there was too many things going on, at Middle you had this whole feud of Winky & JT and you had Abraham & Miranda so his team knew there was too much ruckus there same thing at SMW you had the Joe C. soap opera and all the drama going on there BCD would probably spend too much time standing in line waiting to get a title shot... (look at how many undefeated rising prospects are there).....
At Light Heavy look at the top guys there.... RJJ is fading away, Tarver looks like hes just interested in having the lights on him and not caring much about fighting, Woods IMO won't be around much longer same goes for Johnson, Julio Gonzalez as much as I like him he just aint an elite fighter and can be outworked.
As far as future of the div. it was pretty much open for the taking and look whats turned out of it, he is now the WBC Champ. and beat a very good Champ. at that.....
So yeah!! you just never really now if a boxer will stick in the division, so many things to take into consideration....
I agree. Although I would really like to see this fight happen it's a lose lose situation for Cotto. If he wins people say so what and if he loses everyone (especially the haters.) will be all over Cotto.Originally Posted by CutMeMicK
Nevertheless it would still cool to see this much power in the ring at the same time and at this weight class.
Yep, he would get beaten up by Cotto right now. He's still maturing. Berto is good, he reminds me of Jeff Lacy, but a bit more refined. Just a bit though. Really the perfect match for him right now would be David Estrada in my mind. That would be a real test and a fight Estrada himself is capable of winning. If not Estrada than at least someone like Chris "the Mechanic" Smith.Originally Posted by Lyle

Give Berto a full year of good competition this year, at least 5 fights before moving him up to championship level fighters. The kid will probably be able to make 147 for a couple more years. I think that 2008 will be Berto's year. He's not overrated like maybe Lacy was, this guy is the real deal. He's a great technical boxer that just happens to have HUGE power. Dangerous combination.
Not overrated? He's getting close!
He has good power, he has decent boxing ability but once again VS WHO!!!
It's easy to outbox a guy who doesn't box well.....what happens when he fights a Carlos Quintana or Luis Collazo?
It's easy to sit down on your punches vs a guy who won't damage you back....what happens when he fights a big power guy, like Joel Julio, Miguel Cotto, Kermit Cintron
all of those are still very unknown
I have only seen a couple of Berto's fights but what I have seen he shows some very nice potential. Right now he is so much better than the people he is fighting that he hasnt had to use any boxing skills to get past them. I do wonder about his defense in one bout he was getting hit flush (the guy had no power thou) so that worries me a little. But Berto has two things you cant teach power and speed, that will at least get him up there to where he will have to have some skills to go on.
