from what I've heard armstrong was already a shot fighter when they fought
Robinson defeated former champion Henry Armstrong, who was one of Robinson's idols, who Robinson fought only because Armstrong was in need of finances. By now Armstrong was an old fighter, and Robinson stated that he carried Armstrong.
Yeah he was 3 years removed from his last title but to his credit he had just beat Sammy Angott 2 months before and Angott went on to have spectacular fights with Ike Williams and Beau Jack, two great champions. So he was past his best but unless he became a shot fighter over night, it's not like he was a bum.
But Ray Robinson was in his prime at the time of the fight and he was really just beginning to build a legacy so I'm sure it was a total mismatch. But the trend has been that when you talk about Robinson's great victories you stop short of mentioning Armstrong because Armstrong was old. The Joe Louis - Marciano type thing. But it's not like Armstrong was a bad fighter. At least his record wouldn't suggest it. But SRR was miles ahead of him at that point.
Armstrong was far past his prime. They were friends but a prime Henry Armstrong would have beaten him in his younger years imo. He is the greatest fighter of all time. That fight certainly isnt anything to remember him by
