In 1909 Tommy Burns declared that he would only give Jack Johnson a shot at the title if he was guaranteed 30K. He named such a high price in order to duck Johnson and still keep up the illusion that he would fight anyone. Everyone was surprised when an Australian promoter pushed the limits and came up with the 30K Burns demanded. Johnson was paid 6K.
