I went to my chiropractor and told him I was having trouble with my back in my boxing class when doing ab exercises. He showed me an ab exercise with the swiss ball where you lie on it face down and work the ball to where it's under the arches of your feet while your upper body is in a pushup position. You keep your legs straight and move your hips up and down, it hits the abs pretty good and doesn't bother the back.
