Calzaghe trails Taylor to States to make a rare excursion out of Wales
Calzaghe will make a rare excursion out of Wales
Super middleweight star Joe Calzaghe is heading to Memphis in pursuit of middleweight king Jermain Taylor.
The Welshman, 35, is hoping to secure a super fight with Taylor in September, and will be ringside for the WBC and WBO middleweight champion's next bout.
"My promoter Frank Warren was in the US recently to talk with Taylor's promoter Lou DiBella and they are hopeful something can be done," said Calzaghe.
"I want to make it happen and I will be going to Memphis for Taylor's fight."
Twenty-eight-year-old Little Rock man Taylor, who holds a record of 26-0-1 (17 KOs), defends his titles against Cory Spinks at the Fed-Ex Forum on 19 May.
There's no fracture, relief really is the only word
Calzaghe on his hand injury
"I will be sat at ringside and will tell any of the media in attendance that care to listen how keen I am to face Taylor," said long-reigning WBO super middleweight champion Calzaghe in his column for the South Wales Argus.
"I think this fight would be absolutely huge, rivalling anything in boxing in years, two undefeated champions very rarely get the opportunity to meet one another.
"If 35,000 people came to see me take on Peter Manfredo Jr, just imagine how many would want to see one of the fights of the decade."
Calzaghe, 43-0 (32 KOs), has been boosted by the news that the hand he injured in stopping Manfredo last month is not broken.
"There was a slight fear that a difficult fracture might have been career threatening, but thankfully that isn't the case, a scan confirmed that there is no break," said the Newbridge bruiser.
"It should be healed soon and then I can get back into full training. Relief really is the only word."
