My understanding is that cable requires no additional software or config, whereas ADSL does. Cable should use straight TCP/IP. So you plug the modem into the wall, run a cable from the network card to the modem, make sure your network connection is set to obtain an IP address automatically, and you should be set to go. Also, if this is a standalone computer, you should probably disable file and printer sharing for security purposes.
