If you already know boxing and you box then (not being biased) but Judo will serve you well and then you will cover both ranges.Originally Posted by ICE COLD BOXING
Judo is a fantastic art/sport. Its tough but rewarding and as far as self defence is concerned it works very well since most altercations take place in a confined space or within clinching distance.
Also due to the fact you have to fight for your grades and in competition its pressure tested. You try to throw against a fully resiting opponent and if you go to the ground then you try to submit a fully resiting opponent. In other words none of this choregraphed crap where someone comes at you with a bottle that is so telegraphed that you grab the wrist and try the old twisty wristy funky shit (that never works). Its full on balls to the wall fighting without punches.
Judo teaches you close proxemic awareness, body mechanics, weight displacement. Best of all it teaches you how to ednt hings quickly from the clinch. be under no illisuion though it takes time and you have to invest time before you will be proficient enough to defend yourself with it.
I also train in WW2 combatives. Chin jabs, slaps, hammerfists for striking. All gross motor skills that work well in situation where adrenal stress can cause you to forget the fancy moves you learned in your Ninja class.
If you want any further info then just ask.
