I think I know less about soccer than I do any other sport. I know more about badminton.
In a field theres 11 players per team. When referencing 'formations' one doesn't mention the goalkeeper. For obvious reasons, that being EVERYONE knows where he goes. The 1st number is ALWAYS your defense, then your midfield, last number is your forwards.

The standard formation is 4-4-2 Meaning: 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 2 forwards.
Thats 10 + goalkeeper (which again is a given when referencing formations)

Theres other formations like 4-3-3, 3-4-3 and depending on the style/plan that you have for the game you can pick out a formation.

Italians are known for being defensive so they usually play the 4-4-2, 1 defender stacked/ahead like this....

Goalkeeper
defender defender defender

defender

If you wanna come out attacking cause you've got great forwards then you'll come out with a formation something like.....

goalkeeper
defender defender defender

midfielder midfielder midfielder midfielder

forward forward
forward forward

You can always move them a few steps ahead to give the players more space and be able to move around.
But thats somewhat the gist of it.
