Well i know boxing i thought myself martial arts wouldn't be bad to learn either to protect myself even better.
I know this sounds like rooting for the home team,as it were, but I would recomend Ed Parker Ken-Po
The system was designed with the idea in mind, that even though a perfect roundhouse is a nice goal, the mugger down the block needs to be defended against today.
So it starts of mainly with very hard Ken Po strikes, common sense situations, and a couple of things that are flat out dirty ,but as you become more of a martial artist, and gain greater control over your body it moves in to kung fu,with the theory that a true martial artist shouldnt have to rip the head off of every cheap thug they may be in a confrontation with, and should be able to exude more personal control

I've always felt that a mix if Muay Thai and Judo would best serve for self defense. The US Army did a comprehensive study several years ago on every martial art and self defense system. The verdict was that Sambo was the best overall system, but that it took quite a bit of time to master it.

It is a complete fighting system...SAMBO is a russian acronym for essentially self defense or something...I dont know how much time they spend on striking and in what facets but its is supposed to cover all parts. I've seen sambo tourneys with striking and I've seen some that were just grappling. I think they differentiate it some how between Combat and Sport Sambo
