It is rumoured that WBO/IBF super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (41-0) may next take on former "Contender" favourite Peter Manfredo (25-3). He had an impressive third round stoppage win over Scott Pemberton in February and is now rated IBF#14. Frank Warren has booked the Millenium Stadium for July 8th in Cardiff and the fight against Manfredo would generate huge interest either side of the Atlantic. The preferred option for later in the year is a match for Calzaghe with Antonio Tarver at 175 pounds. Promoter Frank Warren was quoted this week as saying this fight is "90 per cent done." Some verbal sparring continued this week between the camps of Calzaghe and IBF Light-Heavyweight champion Clinton Woods. Initially Dennis Hobson, promoter of Woods offered Calzaghe $1.5m to fight the IBF champion on a Pay per view show on Sky Sports but Warren wanted to show alliegence to TV station ITV1 and counter-offered $750k to Woods to defend his title against Calzaghe. It appears the TV allegiances will prevent this bout in 2006 at this stage.
