That could be exactly what happened thats why I think its brilliant the way it ended because, it kinda leaves it up to the audience to fill in the blanks.
The only thing I'm not sure if I agree with you though is when you said the long sustained darkness could simbolize death. I actually though in film and cinema that a white screen indicated death. I could be wrong but through I definately wasn't a film major. But all in all I do like your analogy "its like the punch you don't see that gets yeah" and the ending.

a white screen for heavens gate would be a positive. . However lights out darkness for the Hell bound Tony Soprano? I enjoyed that show . very interesting twists and turns. the earlier seasons were the cream IMO

I remember seeing my first Episode a few years back where Chris and Paulie take this Russian in the woods (to off him) the two get lost in the woods , they lose the Russian and Paulie loses his shoes.. funny as hell that ..got me hooked. I ended up buying all the seasons to catch up.. fantastic show !
