That could be exactly what happened thats why I think its brilliant the way it ended because, it kinda leaves it up to the audience to fill in the blanks.
The only thing I'm not sure if I agree with you though is when you said the long sustained darkness could simbolize death. I actually though in film and cinema that a white screen indicated death. I could be wrong but through I definately wasn't a film major. But all in all I do like your analogy "its like the punch you don't see that gets yeah" and the ending.
