He didn't really have competition in 60s like in 70s so you can't really say that yes he was better but he didn't really have competition in 60s except Patterson and very old Liston.
Liston fought for 6 more years after that fight,Foley had been dodged when he was number 1 contender, until Ali fought him

There is considerable uncertainty about when Liston was actually born. He gave his birth year as 1932. Many believe he was born in 1927, though there is no son named Charles listed with the family in the 1930 census.

Ali was an unreal combination of everything, endurance, speed, power(sorely underated there),and footwork.
He was an icon for almost 20 years,he transended the sport like noone since
Well said. Ali is such an icon that we sometimes forget what an INCREDIBLE athlete he was. In his absolute prime...he was a thing of beauty. And later in his career he showed his tremendous heart and intelligence (though one can argue that beatings he allowed on himself brought on his Parkinson's). Add too that his incredible level of competition and sense of drama...and he edges ray Robinson as the best fighter of all time imo. But as trainer Monkey said...the whole Ali/Robinson debate is ultimately pointless. Both such special fighters.

So you think Henry and Pep would beat Ali if they fought?
I think both Henry and Pep are exceptional fighters but I don't think they are better then Ali.

I've never seen the fight but I read an article thats said SRR won a very contriversial fight against Marty Servo the decision caused some rioting in MSG.
I've also read he struggled with California Jackie Wilson, Jose Basora in this fight Barosa came on strong closing out and wining the last rounds.
And I'm sure if you look more into his career he had some more tough/close fights that people feel he lost.

So if SRR lost all those fights would he still be recognized as the best P4P?

Who knows ?? Pep is defensive master and Armstrong is a windmill.

    Nicely put
"Dont screw around with good fighters"-Ali did it all the time
"Dont sit on the ropes"-See the Rumble
"Dont get your head too far away from your center of balance"-almost every fight
    "Dont drop your hands"-again
I watch Ali's fights just for the joys of watching him work, instruction wise, theyre completely bloody useless, except from a "Dont even try it" aspect

The best "boxer" of all time has to be Willie Pep. Ali was the greatest among the big guys next to Joe Louis.

Ali is easily the greatest HW to ever grace the ring. He knew how to market himself behind the skill.
Even those who did not like him at the time had no choice but to respect him.

Ali always amazed me for several reasons. The first is his obvious skill in the ring. But that is the fighter part that amazed me the second was the man himself. He came along in an era where America was in a transition. Civil rights were at the forefront of USA being in a disarray and Vietnam came along soon after. Ali managed to not only dominate in the ring but he made use of his fame to help causes more then just his own. Something you do not see often not just in boxing but in the world in general.
Was Ali the greatest fighter to ever grace the ring??...Probably not. Robinson IMO takes that title now and more then likely for quite some time to come. Even a Prime Ali would tell you that straight from his own mouth. A strong case can be made also for Hank Armstrong..Willie Pep..and a few others....

But Ali is the most recognizable figure to ever participate in this sport and perhaps the face of boxing. He is known the world wide still to this day. There was a study done one time where people went to third world countries with pictures of famous people. Ali was recognized second to only the Pope!!!! This was in places where people did not even have TV!!!!!

Like I said though there are some other guys over the years who may be ranked along side or even surpass Ali as a P4P all time great but No One and I stress No ONE!!!! Has brought boxing more attention in a positive manner then Ali.....And perhaps no other fighter to ever grace the ring is more beloved
