He wasn't a great inside fighter... but he was good at it... he stood in the pocket for 8 rounds against George Mo Fo'ing foreman and I'm guessing you've seen the Thrilla right? More to inside fighting than just punching... the few fighters strong or skilled enough to get on the inside against Ali couldn't get to him.
