1997: Whitaker tests positive for cocaine after an October bout with Andrei Pestraiev, changing a victory into a no-contest.

1998: Whitaker arrested twice for reckless driving in Virginia Beach, gets suspended sentences on both counts. He also tests positive for cocaine, which eliminates bout with Ike Quartey.

1999: Whitaker arrested, pleads guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.

August 9, 2001: Whitaker, after pleading guilty to speeding and driving without a valid license, is sentenced to four days in the Virginia Beach jail. Deputies processing him find cocaine on his person and he is charged with possession of a controlled substance.

January, 2002: Whitaker pleads guilty to cocaine possession, but is given first offender status and a year’s probation in lieu of a prison sentence, which carries a maximum of 10 years.

August 2002: Given a four-year suspended sentence with probation of one year.

January 2002: Whitaker turns himself into police

March 13, 2002: Whitaker taken to hospital after apparent cocaine overdose.

March 28, 2002: Whitaker arrested and charged with contempt of court, for violating terms of his probation.

May 2, 2002: Whitaker sentenced in Virginia Beach, Va., 30 days of a six-month jail term for third reckless driving conviction.

February 14, 2003: Whitaker was held without bond in Virginia Beach after being charged for driving under the influence. He refuses to take a breathalyzer test. A hearing is scheduled March 11.

March 11. 2003: Whitaker receives a 27-month prison sentence on his second DUI conviction (his first was in 1999) after judge.
