Here is something i don't understand in MMA

chokes.. is it literally that ? strangling them till they pass out ?

is it illegal to just get on top of someone and strangle them by the throat ?

seems very dangerous to cut off the air supply to someones brain, in medecine i think they call that a stroke, and people get paralysed that way, is there something im missing ?
