LOS ANGELES - With the Philippine vs. Mexico World Cup of Boxing just two weeks away, the Philippine team steps up their training. The boxing special is set to explode at the Arco Arena in Sacramento on August 11. The Philippine team arrived in Los Angeles in early July and has been training at the Wildcard Gym since.

Inside the Wildcard Gym, Michael “Bruce Lee” Domingo prepares doing a variety of military push-ups as ALA boxing trainer Edito and Edmond Villamor facilitate. As he finishes his reps, Z “the Dream” Gorres dressed in the famed ALA boxing trunks, makes his way to the same spot to do his own set of push-ups. They both make their way to the corner of the gym, completing their training for the day with excruciating sit-up repetitions.

Meanwhile, Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista watches a sparring match closely. Alex John “Bazooka” Banal has just finished his workout as Bert Batawang confers with ALA boxing trainer Jeremiah Quijano in another corner speaking. Diosdado Gabi, a new addition to the fight card, waits to complete his final sit up sets.

“The team is training very hard everyday, except Sunday, for two to three hours,” says Edito. “Everybody [on the team] is in good shape and there are no injuries.”

Freddie Roach of the Wildcard Gym said the Philippines teams training habits are great.

“All my Filipino fighters train over 110 percent,” said Roach. “They are all very good, very disciplined, very conditioned. We never worry too much about them. Simply put, they don’t BS.”

The Philippine team faces a stiff challenge against defending World Cup of boxing champion Mexico.

Domingo (27-16-3 11 KO’s) of Libac, Philippines is training for his upcoming fight against undefeated Mexican Miguel Roman (22-0 16 KO’s). Gorres (26-2-1, 14 KOs) of Mandaue City faces Mexico City’s Gerson Guerrero (33-7 25 KO’s) in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) Junior Bantamweight
    Title eliminator bout.

Other undercard bouts scheduled for the night include unbeaten rising star Banal (13-0-1, 10 KO’s) of Ermita, who faces Eric Ortiz (26-6-1, 17 KO’s) of Mexico City. Mexico City boxer Gerardo Verde (15-4, 11 KO’s) will battle Batawang (50-6, 34 KO’s) of Cebu in a 12 round IBF Junior Flyweight Title eliminator. The latest addition to the matches is the eight round junior bantamweight clash between Mexico City’s Jose Angel Beranza (30-9-2, 25 KO’s) vs. Davao City’s Gabi (29-3-1, 21 KO’s).

The main event will feature World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Featherweight World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (31-1, 28 KO’s) of Chihuahua, Mexico defending his title against number one contender Boom Boom Bautista (23-0, 17 KO’s) of Cebu City, Philippines.

The co-featured championship bout will pit power-punching Jhonny Gonzalez (34-5, 29 KO’s) of Mexico City defending his WBO Bantamweight Crown against wily-veteran former World Champion Gerry Penalosa (51-6-2, 34 KO’s) of Manila.

The country with the most victories at the second Boxing World Cup will be awarded a specially-designed trophy made by IceLink.
HBO Boxing After Dark will televise the two co-featured world championship fights live beginning at 10 p.m. EST, with a tape-delayed airing on the West Coast at 10 p.m.
