    Default Gladiator vs Boxers

Sometimes, I had to think that boxing is a less bloody version of the gladiator fights. No wonder Romans loved watching gladiator fights.I wonder how the future generations would think about boxing. Will they condemn us for the "brutalities" we enjoy watching? Feel free to comment.

Here's the parallels between gladiators and boxers:

Gladiator fights were to the death, boxing used to be until one man dropped but ws later reformed. Now there's time limits, decisions, and referee jurisdiction to stop a fight in case one is getting badly injured.

Most boxing fans don't HAVE to see a knockout in order to be entertained where as the losing gladiator had to be killed for the crowds satisfaction (reasom rome finally collapsed is basically because it was more interested in watching the deaths of its citizens as opposed to concentrating on fighting off its enemies which it was surrounded by).

Winning gladiators got the best of life: Money, fame, and virtually anything else they wanted. Boxers (and pro athletes in general) today receive about the same benefits.

Sure there's technique for stabbing someone with a sword, but boxing has a much more technical aspect to it than just shear brutality.

Boxers usually hug and converse after a fight where as there was only one galdiator left after a fight.

They have similarites and differences but when you put it into perspective, boxing is nowhere near as barbaric as the gladiator times. People who want boxing banned because its too "violent" are ignorant of the sport. Killing isn't a sport, boxing is.

I think most people already do. It's "kewl" to hate boxing.

I blame the Democrats, of course.

On a serious not tho, boxing is nowhere near as brutal as it was back in the 30's. The refs wouldn't stop fights for anything. Primo Carnera had to be knocked down 11 times by baer before the ref thought "maybe this is too onesided". Boxing stresses discipline and sportsmanship (tho trashtalking to promote a fight is an art within itself) and a lot of people don't actually compete in it, they just learn the basics and train in it like a hobby (similar to how some people do karate). It's not about hurting your opponent, it's about strengthening yourself.

Sorry, a lack of sleep brings out the teddy atlas in me sometimes.

Actually gladiators were not killed nearly as much as people think. They were expensive commodities and more often then not faked their deaths using their equivalent of movie tricks like using sheep's blood and such.

There were a lot of deaths though, mostly criminals made to fight lions and other wild animals. And of course many, many Christians.

I suspect that years from now boxers will have full body armor or padding and will look back at the days went those crazy fighters use to go out there with out even wearing head gear. Maybe thousands of years from now there will be no contact sports whatsoever. Society evolves and most of what we do now will eventually seem primitive or even barbaric.

Maybe brucelee was talking about the "American Gladiator" tv show in late 80's.

Am more of the same thinking as Rookie Fan. When fights will become computerized and there will be no more live boxers. All will be virtual reality. Maybe future people will be thinking about how brute we were just like how we think gladiator fights were.

That came out of nowhere lol

American Gladiators were true warriors. No way I would let someone fire NERF weapons at me or get pummeled with a stick with pillows on the ends. That is suicide.
