In a way I feel like a hipocrit for saying I'd find it hard to do because I grew up in a farming family. Still when it came to controlling number of rabbits (huge problem in Australia) my brothers and their dogs and ferrets did it and not in a way which had them dying slowly. I wasn't ever expected to kill anything - just do other basic animal feeding and upkeep chores.
I don't remember us ever killing our own pigs or cows - for our own food we sent them to the local butcher to kill and prepare them and gave him an animal for his own as payment. Animals which were sold for profit were shipped off alive in trucks to be either sold to other farmers for breeding (or wool in the case of sheep) or to the abattoir where I imagine they have skilled fast and hopefully hygienic workers.
