Roger Mayweather on Hatton, Cotto, Mosley Recommend this page Printable version Search BoxingScene Database

In a recent interview with Brent Matteo Alderson of BoxingScene.com, Roger Mayweather, trainer and uncle of WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr., gave his thoughts on a variety of topics.
He thinks a great fight will happen when Floyd Mayweather takes on Ricky Hatton on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and thinks Hatton's only chance to win is to stay close and be aggressive.
"Ricky Hatton is tough. He doesn't have the boxing skills of Floyd, but he's going to use whatever he's got to win. What else can he do? He can't outbox him," Mayweather said. "All he can do is be aggressive and try to stay close, but what else can he do?"
Roger was a very successful pro, winning the WBA super featherweight title, WBC and IBO junior welterweight title, IBO and IBA welterweight titles and piled up a 59-13, 35KOs record before he retired in 1999. He feels the 1989 version of himself would beat the current day version of Ricky Hatton.
"I would have beat Ricky Hatton like I did all the rest of them before him. To hit him is easy, to hit him is easy. He's an aggressive fighter, but to hit him is easy. You look at the fight even with him and Kostya Tszyu, the fight was pretty much dead even and Tszyu fought him in his hometown. Floyd Mayweather aint no Kostya Tszyu," Mayweather said. "I fought Tszyu when I was 35-years-old (in 1995) and I really had no problems so for Hatton to have problems with him......"
"It was a good win for Hatton but nothing spectacular."
Mayweather knows the next opponent for Floyd will probably come out of the Nov. 10 battle between WBA welterweight champ Miguel Cotto and former three division title-holder "Sugar" Shane Mosley. He gives Mosley a big edge in the fight and sees him as the clear victor.
"I like Mosley to win. I think Mosley has two good hands and that's going to be the difference in the fight. Cotto is a good puncher, but he's basically one-handed and plus Shane has a good chin," Mayweather said. "And Shane is probably the better caliber of fighter. If you look at it in terms of who fought the better guys, Shane Mosley fought the better guys. If I was going to lean on someone that was going to win (in the fight), I would lean on Shane Mosley."
The HBO produced De La Hoya-Mayweather 24/7, a reality program used to hype the May 5 De La Hoya-Mayweather pay-per-view, was a ratings blockbuster and a hit with executives at HBO. The unpredictable nature nature of the Mayweather family made it popular even among the most casual of boxing fans. Mayweather says that HBO tried to get them to do a reality show after the May 5 event was over.
"They loved the show. Mayweathers made the show. De La Hoya didn't do nothing. He was very calm and casual. They said that ya'll should do a reality show on HBO. We never did it, but that's what they wanted to do," Mayweather said.
As far as when he thinks Floyd will retire, it all depends on the amount of money offered by the networks.
"Whatever makes money make sense. Floyd wants to retire undefeated. It all depends on what the networks offer him. Money can keep a dead man alive," Mayweather said.
This guy is so funny, hoepfully its all hype, but he had no problems with a green 14-0 novice in Tszyu? WTF the guy lost nearly every round? I think its all talk i think they no it will be a tough fight. Also the KT fight was even? If thats the case why was he pulled out with two rounds to go?
