I agree with you on this, the Ringu trilogy in Japan completely owned the American Ring, even though that was probably my favourite Hollywood horror for years.

The original's though have so much more back story and atmosphere that you don't get with the American remakes.

Plus Ringu's Sadako is 20 million million times more scary than Hollywoods Samara.

The American one was just a cute little girl covered in mud, you couldn't see how she could make anyone die of fear, the Japanese Sadako gave me nightmares for months

The creepiest girl of all time.
