Well, as we return to September and the summer (or so it was billed) fades into history for another year, boxing in Britain returns to our screens, with Junior Witter's mandatory defence of his WBC Light-Welterweight title against "Vicious" Vivian Harris.
This is Junior Witter's (35-1-2, 20KOs) second defence of the WBC title he won in a 12-round snoozer against DeMarcus Corley last September, where even the referee struggled to fight off the yawns, and mostly remembered for a 30 second period in one of the middle rounds where both fighters faced each other without throwing a single blow. Witter's counter-attacking style which has brought him slowly to his WBC LWW title is no doubt effective, as he is difficult to hit, but it has failed to excite fans and media alike, and left him in the shadow of his more succesful peer Ricky Hatton. In his last fight against Arturo Morua in January he looked sluggish against the inferior Mexican for eight rounds, before an explosive finish in fantastic style woke up those drifting off. If he can create the devastating combinations which destroyed Morua more frequently, Witter could yet gain international recognition, and earn himself a lot more money in the process, but that has to be earnt.
Vivian Harris (28-2-1, 18KOs) has mixed among a greater level of combinations over recent years, and will likely be the biggest challenge for Witter since his early career defeat against Zab Judah. Harris made 5 defences of his WBA LWW title between 2002 and 2005 before a shock 7th round KO against Carlos Maussa derailed his career. Harris is used to being the away fighter after two impressive wins in Germany over Oktay Urkal, and could find Doncaster to be a warm welcome compared to the German crowd. Harris is coming off a good win in the eliminator against Juan Laczano, where he showed he can box as well as punch, and will prove whether Witter really deserve the WBC title he won after it was vacated by Floyd Mayweather.
Not too much on the unercard to be honest, and the show starts at 10pm UK time, 5pm EST.
