People talk about Marciano being a powehouse, tough guy etc.

Check out his record and look at theguys he struggled against. People say that Louis had weak opposition...the point is that Louis DESTROYED them.

Of course Marciano looked tough against the opposition he was facing. He would be considered tough in other eras. The likes of Dempsey would destroy him.

People who consider schmeling a soft puncher should note that he had a decent number of KO's on his record.

I just can't see the fighter who got battered by Woolcott for 13 rounds until he pulled out a knockout punch having any hope at all with some of the towering brilliant heavyweights that have come since.

Ali would have been too clever for him, Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis would have just been too big, and would have punished him with their jabs for 12 rounds, he wouldn't go 15 with Lewis or Holmes no way.

A prime Sonny Liston would have overpowered him,.

I like Marciano he was a great fighter and brilliant to watch but he wouldn't have coped with the very best heavyweights of all time.

In talking specifically about Schmeling vs. Marciano, Marciano wins by banging him to the body (like Louis did). Schmeling did have a great right hand, but Marciano got dumped by left hooks. Right hands didn't bother him because he protected himself for the right hand by his crouching style.

marciano was blinded for half the fight--when he got his eyesight back-he ko walcotts ass--if u've ever seen marciano-walcott 2--thats real evidence walcott was never a serious threat to rocky....nobody ever seems 2 mention the second fight at all

did you look at Marciano's record before you wrote that?!! Unbelievable!! 49-0 43 KO'S Who did he struggle against. Jersey Joe? Remind me..How did that fight end? KO!! Archie Moore? KO!! Everybody has style conflicts that create close fights.. but, winners win those fights..You cannot compare the era's either...anyone remember the Joe Louis bum of the month club? ...Timing decides who's seen as great and who isn't.
It feels good to be back home.

He would not have had enough firepower to keep Marciano off him for 12 rounds, never mind 15. I think Marciano wins 8 out of 10 fights against Max, by stoppage but not outright KO.

The 2 that Max wins would have been stoppages on cuts
This is pretty accurate. Those that think that Walcott was a bum are way off. He was an incredibly well-conditioned fighter, a rare case of a man who really didn't reach his prime until he was in his mid 30s. Walcott was chiseled and strong, someone who would be totally devastating if he were fighting as a cruiserweight today. It was a respectable achievement for Marciano to have beaten him.

From the fights of Schmeling that I saw, particularly his 1st fight with Sharkey and his fight with Young Stribling, I have concluded that Schmeling was a great fighter for his time. He rarely held and looked a bit like Dempsey, bobbing and weaving and coming in out of a crouch. He often held his left hand low. It's hard to pick him over Marciano though because of the difference in punching power. It might very well have been a serious war with little clinching and tons of punching. If that was the case I can't see Schmeling lasting more than a few rounds with Rocky.
