Here is a quote from Kevin Iole of Yahoo!
Extraordinarily powerful was the testimony of Dr. Stephen Olvey, director of the neurosurgical intensive care unit at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital.

"Athletes who suffered more serious subdural hematomas than Mesi, Olvey said, have returned safely to competition. Olvey cited racer Roberto Guerrero, who suffered a far more severe injury than Mesi and not only returned to racing but was in other violent crashes and did not suffer another subdural hematoma.

The basis of the commission's position Mesi is unfit to box is because he has already had one subdural hematoma, or bleed on the brain, he is at greater risk to have another.

If that is true, the commission did the right thing Thursday by voting 5-0 to uphold his medical suspension.

But none of the five members of the commission, not even Drs. Tony Alamo and Flip Homansky, gave evidence to support that position."

Now, onto Barrera. His injury was MUCH MUCH worse. The problem is that it happened in Mexico and Nevada didn't find out about it until long after it occured. Right before the first pacman fight.

"Dr. Julian Bailes, who works with the NFL Players Association to study brain injuries, said without an underlying injury to the brain itself a person who has had a subdural hematoma that has healed is no more likely to suffer another one than anyone else"

With Respect Mikefromstu ,not quite an education but I applaud your passion and Insight, what it comes down to is theres no proof theres a greater risk of it happening twice. Can we prove a negative?I believe Barrera surgery consisted of the removal of an enlarged vessel or vein ? and steel was placed over the repaired area.was it a disaster prevented, could have been as it was discovered and seen to be a concern and taken care of.He was tested after the fact and was seen fit to continue by medical persons and comissions.in mesis case The commision saw fit to stick by it's descision for what they see as a qualified and edcucated reasons although La./W.va./Ark. Have disagreed.
Im afraid the only way to make a case that there is a greater risk of reoccurence is the morbid task of citing past fighters and or other athletes that have payed with there lives( and you and I both know there are cases) for rolling the dice and following the money, alot of cases being pushed by selfish promotors/managers/and in the saddest cases for some, themselves.
Still,Imo Mesi should retire and not to sound flip but his skill set does not bode well for him to take alot of damage. Thanks for the dialouge and input, these things need to be disscussed and put out there. to ya.
