Not sure how true it is, but Beristein claims that they had an agreement to rematch Pac for an agreed-upon amount of money (I forget what the $ figure was). Then Pac's team came back and offered them less $$$ than they had originally agreed upon. So Marquez/Beristain rejected the fight on principle because they felt they were being lowballed.

Fighting John for 30K was definitely a dumb move though. Either get more money or fight an easy opponent in the states.
I'm sure I've read that somewhere too but either way,the rematch must happen now. There are no more excuses.

I missed where it says that Marquez wants $2 million to fight Pac.

I see that part where it mentions Barrera got the same $2 million that Pacquiao got, but maybe Marquez wants more than $2 million.
Sorry BG my man, poor wording on my behalf. JMM wants the same amount as Manny,so whatever Manny gets,he wants the same, and I used MAB as a point(ie he recieved the same as Manny coming off a loss,no title and beaten before etc)

*Obviously the money posed as a problem which is the most known reason for the rematch not happening.

*Marquez beat (by decision) lesser known fighters in Orlando Solido and Victor Polo. Then eventually got screwed against Chris John. But in the end, that put a loss in his record and made him less credible to fight Pacquiao again. Pacquiao on the other hand viciously knocked out his next opponent, Fahsan Battery, then lost to Erik Morales in one hell of a fight. He then knocked out Hector Velazquez and Morales two times, plus a decision over Larios.

*On paper after they fought the first time the resume is not even close.

Marquez: W12 Solido, W12 Polo, L12 John, TKO7 Terdsak Jandaeng, KO9 Jimrex Jaca.

Pacquiao: TKO4 Battery, L12 Morales, TKO6 Velazquez, TKO10 Morales, W12 Larios, TKO3 Morales, TKO8 Solis.

All-in-all if you asked the general question on what happened with Marquez and Pacquiao after they fought you would hear "Marquez lost to some guy" and "Pacquiao won a violent trilogy against Morales."

*The promotional war between Golden Boy and Top Rank over Pacquiao also didn't help the cause for the rematch.

*Once Marquez beat Barrera, that put him on the map again and showed he has what it takes to get in the ring with Pacquiao. The public, aside from the die-hard boxing fans, needed concrete evidence the rematch would compare to the first. Marquez is set up to fight Juarez next. That would put another somewhat big name to his resume (even though Juarez is the luckiest and most undeserving fighter in the division) but it is still infact a name. There no better set-up for the rematch with Pacquiao.

Any thoughts on my theory?
An excellent ttheory but I disagree with 1 thing. JMM's loss to John was a poor decision but as you correctly stated,an L on his record, but guys like Larios,Fahsan etc had lost too so I don't think it was that big a deal. Heck lot of people did not know he lost to Johna and a few didn't even know they were fighting/have not seen it. So I don't think that loss does too much damage JMM's image so to speak.
