He hit like a mule and had an amazing late career but prime for prime there's at least 4 people above him in those stakes.

Ali showed us that he didn't have much of a boxing brain and of you could hang in there with him you could beat him.

I'm in awe of his come back career but the division was weak at the time (which still doesn't greatly cheapen what he did) and had things happened slightly differently against Moorer it would of been a nice try but a lopsided UD.

I hate having to argue against George but 3rd best is just too high...
Albeit a a weak division at the time George was in his mid 40's when he beat the Universally recognized Heavyweight champ of the world, not a fringe abc belt but George was the man.

He put an azz whoopin on Frazier 2x and Norton as well as Chuvalo(who was as durable as there was) He got off the Floor vs Lyle and he lost to an underrated Jimmy Young. No shame in losing to Ali who was the greatest, but you be hard pressed to find a heavy with a better resume.

In his 2nd career he never tasted the canvas despite fighting guys he was usually 12 years older than, his Chin was spectacular and his heart was only rivaled by Holyfields. He got screwed vs Briggs and Morrison fought the Pussiest of a fight. George accomplishments are only rivaled by Joe Louis and Ali, Marciano isint even in the Convo
