Interesting that Ring Magazine had this fight as the upset of the year? No fight with Azumah Nelson is upset of the year! Note that two judges had this fight even at the time of the stoppage in the 2nd fight!!
Fenech never recovered from the robbery and that's his problem, losing to Calvin Grove by knockout tarnished his career and standing considerably. I have met him a couple of times and he was pleasant enough.I do notice that a lot of fighters he trains end up leaving him for whatever reason (personality clashes more likely) Green, Taylor and Vic etc
Fenech was a bull in the ring and never took a step backwards, he had great fights with Daniel Zaragoza, Victor Callejas and Azumah Nelson. Fenech was a good but not great fighter who really should have achieved more in his career than he did.
Hard man to impress there Third man. Fenech just a good fighter?
Some of his achievments.
Won IBF bantamweight title in only his 7th fight.
Won titles in 3 weight classes (could have been 4 if given the win v nelson when he was robbed)
Had 11 title defences.
Pretty good for a fighter who was not great, and guys who have done a lot less get a lot more props.
